Criminal defense lawyer Karen M. Sosa

About the Firm

My practice is grounded in close legal research, careful statutory and case-based analysis, and written advocacy designed to test the government’s case early and often. I assume from the outset that a case may be tried in front of a jury, and I prepare accordingly.

Rather than defaulting to negotiations, I focus on identifying genuine legal and evidentiary issues that can narrow, weaken, or resolve a case. That includes developing dispositive and issue-narrowing motions, challenging charging decisions, and assertively using case law, the rules of evidence, and Constitutional rights as tools, not afterthoughts.

Thorough trial preparation is part of the same work. In complex matters, particularly in federal cases involving voluminous discovery, I spend the time required to understand the record in detail, anticipate the government’s theory, and prepare to defeat it. I also have the tech savvy necessary to understand and weaponize digital evidence that is so crucial in modern white collar cases. That depth of preparation and knowledge informs every strategic decision, whether a case ultimately resolves or proceeds to trial.

I am selective in the matters I take on and frequently collaborate with co-counsel to bring focused research, writing, and strategic support to trial teams and appellate matters.

Representative Matters

  • Felony child pornography charges dismissed after filing a motion to suppress based on deficiencies in the search warrants and their execution, resulting in dismissal and sealing of the record.

  • Accessory to attempted murder charge dismissed through post-preliminary-hearing motion practice following extensive litigation of Miranda violations.

  • Over 30 charges in a multi-million dollar fraud prosecution dismissed, after successfully arguing a motion to dismiss that eliminated more than half of the prosecution's case and substantially reduced the the client's restitution exposure.

  • Obtained a brief custodial term for a third-striker facing life for torture and aggravated mayhem and dismissal of a related probation violation based on extradition law violations.

  • Exposed and litigated vindictive prosecution by a district attorney’s office, obtaining a court order for the production of internal prosecutorial communications; the case was ultimately dismissed and arrest record sealed.

  • Secured dismissal and record sealing for a medical professional charged in a sprawling insurance fraud prosecution, successfully challenging deficiencies in the grand jury proceedings and obtaining diversion after reassignment of the case to a new prosecutor.

  • Served as second chair in a federal jury trial for distribution of fentanyl causing death, then successfully appealed the case to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, where the conviction was reversed.
